The Granting of Wishes
Another Poems by Ward Kelley

Each Time Incorrupt

Authors Notes

I understand your reluctance
to come to my bed much more
than I can comprehend your
unquenchable desire to utter

exhortations to this new god
of yours... for where my flesh
has always responded to the ways
and requests of any young girl

who bears an inquiry in the proper
manner, never once have I received
an answer to my own prayers made to
any god... for who can properly know

the desires of gods'. And I am
convinced, after living all my years,
they only grant those wishes that will
eventually make fools of us. So stop

all this resistance and come to my bed;
but not, I assure you, for the usual purpose...
no, I promise our flesh will not touch, for
I only wish assurance that you do indeed

occupy my heart with the same
sincerity that fuels your prayers.
